Phase iv Clinical Trials
Phase IV trials are the step in the process of medical research and product testing that is known as the postmarketing surveillance procedure. These clinical trials are ongoing and can last for years after a drug company turns in its regulatory report for permission to sell the product and is a necessary step to ensuring that a product is safe even after this occurs. The phase 4 clinical trials especially help to identify problems with a certain medication or device that only occur after quite some time has passed. These studies are usually required by the authorities who regulate the selling of pharmaceutical drugs but they can also be started by the company who sponsors a certain drug for reasons of competitiveness and also for other reasons. In terms of competitiveness, a company may want to find new markets for the drug by doing a follow up of those who use the drug and testing for other uses of a drug other then its intended uses. The companies who sponsor a certain medication may also want to test a drug for how it interacts when combined with other medication as well during phase 4 clinical trials. In this way the phase 4 trials are not only necessary for marketing but for ensuring health and wellness as well.
Since the phase IV trials are used to monitor the safety of a certain drug and how it may interact with other drugs and various people this is the stage of testing that can make or break a medication. The medications are also tested for a longer period of time than in any other type of clinical trial stage and this makes this stage an ideal way to gauge if a drug is effective in the long run or not. Needless to say many drugs that reach the phase 4 clinical trials may be recalled because of long term side effects or harm caused to people who use it.
